Ohio State title trophy refers to UM as ‘TUN’

Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner is sandwiched by Ohio State safety Tyvis Powell, left, and linebacker Joshua Perry in the second quarter during their 2014 game in Columbus, Ohio.

As it does every year, Michigan played its annual grudge match against Ohio State last season.

But, you’d have a hard time telling looking at the Buckeyes’ national championship trophy.

Doug Lesmerises of the Northeast Ohio Media Group reported Thursday morning that the trophy, on display at the renovated trophy lobby at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, lists each opponent from the Buckeyes championship season by name. Except one.

Instead, for its Nov. 29 showdown — a 42-28 Ohio State victory in Columbus — it lists “TUN” as the opponent, for “Team Up North.”

Nothing new here in this long, heated rivalry, which is marked by an unwillingness by either foe to refer to the other by name. Former Michigan coach Brady Hoke, remember, referred to the Buckeyes only as “Ohio” during his brief stay in Ann Arbor.
