Michigan sophomore defenseman Zach Werenski has been named captain of the 2016 U.S. junior national hockey team, USA Hockey announced Tuesday.
Werenski, of Grosse Pointe Woods, is the second youngest player to captain a U.S. junior national team. He helped the junior team finish fifth in last year’s world junior championship tournament, notching a goal and an assist.
In 15 games with the Wolverines this season, Werenski has 12 points (four goals, eight assists). He was the No. 8 pick in last year’s NHL Entry Draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Defenseman Louis Belpedio and forwards Auston Matthews and Colin White were named alternate captains.
