Brian Smith, assistant linebackers coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, is expected to be Michigan's new defensive backs coach, according to a sourced report Thursday by the Washington Post.

Smith is a UMass alum and was a three-year starter in the secondary. He then spent three seasons on the UMass staff under Don Brown, now Michigan's new defensive coordinator who was hired last December from Boston College to replace D.J. Durkin. Smith coached receivers at UMass his final two seasons in 2004 and 2005.

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh was left with a staff vacancy when defensive backs coach Greg Jackson recently accepted a job with the Dallas Cowboys.

After coaching at his alma mater, Smith spent eight seasons as a New York Jets assistant before moving on to the Eagles.
