In a thoughtful statement shared on social media, former Michigan linebacker Mike McCray, a captain last season, announced he is retiring from football.

McCray was not drafted but signed as a free agent with the Miami Dolphins. His revelation came only a few days before NFL training camps open.

“For some time now, I have been playing the game of football for the wrong reason and during this time I sacrificed my happiness and my well being," McCray wrote in the Tuesday post.

“You deserve to be Happy. You deserve to live a life you’re excited about. Don’t let others make you forget that.”

McCray was a Ufer award winner last season. It is given to the player who demonstrates the most enthusiasm and love for Michigan, ordinarily given to a senior.

He was a two-time All-Big Ten honorable-mention selection.
