Shea Patterson has yet to officially be named Michigan's starting quarterback for this season, but he's the guy Yahoo!'s Pat Forde would pay to see play.
Patterson, the Wolverines' new addition under center from Ole Miss, is No. 4 on Forde's list of 25 most intriguing quarterbacks for the 2018 season, posted Monday morning.
Despite Patterson's resume — the former five-star recruit threw for 3,139 yards and 23 touchdowns (and 12 interceptions) in 10 games over two seasons at Ole Miss — Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh has yet to name a starter, waiting for "the guy" to emerge from a group that includes redshirt sophomore Brandon Peters, who played in six games (including four starts) last season, redshirt freshman Dylan McCaffrey and freshman Joe Milton.
If it's Patterson, Forde writes there will be a lot on his shoulders.
"The most important transfer in college football, having negotiated some contentious times after leaving Mississippi and gaining immediate eligibility in Ann Arbor," Forde writes. "Now all he has to do is ignite the Wolverines’ anemic passing game, lead some of the big victories the program has been lacking in recent years and solidify Jim Harbaugh’s job status. No big deal."
Among those just missing the list is Michigan State quarterback Brian Lewerke, who helped lead the Spartans to a seven-win turnaround in his first full season as a starter in 2017, throwing for 2,793 yards and 20 touchdowns, with just seven interceptions. He also rushed for 559 yards (4.5 per carry) and five more touchdowns.
No. 15 on Forde's list is Buffalo's Tyree jackson, a Muskegon product who Forde calls a "developing talent."
"He’s got an arm and he can run," Forde writes, "and some people are wondering whether he can be the Josh Allen of the 2019 draft."
Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts are Nos. 1 and 1a, respectively, on Forde's list.
