Michigan’s big 42-7 win over Penn State, combined with LSU’s 29-0 loss to Alabama, allowed the Wolverines to jump up to No. 4 in this week’s Associated Press college football poll and in the Amway coaches' poll.

Both polls were released Sunday.

Michigan (8-1, 6-0 Big Ten) had been ranked fifth in both polls.

The top six teams in both polls are Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame, Michigan, Georgia and Oklahoma.

Michigan State returned to the AP rankings following the win over Maryland; the Spartans are ranked No. 24.

In the coaches' poll, MSU is just outside the Top 25 with 144 points.

The second installment of the College Football Playoff rankings will be revealed on Tuesday night. The top four teams in the final rankings on Dec. 2 make the playoff.

The Wolverines have three games remaining – at Rutgers, home against Indiana and at Ohio State. If the Wolverines win out they will take the Big Ten East Division title and will play in the Big Ten championship game on Dec. 1.
