Game summary

Illinois scored 25 unanswered points to give Michigan a scare on Saturday in Champaign, but the Wolverines' offense woke up in the knick of time and put up 14 points in the fourth to earn a 42-25 victory.

Michigan takes over at the 21.

Shea Patterson throws complete to Tarik Black on first down for a gain of 12.

Zach Charbonnet is stopped for a gain of 3 on first down. Patterson keeps on an option and dashes ahead to the Michigan 46. He was yanked down by his face mask, putting Michigan at the Illinois 39.

Patterson's first-down throw to Donovan Peoples-Jones is underthrown, but still hauled in for a gain of 18. The Wolverines will again have a first down, this time at the 21. 

Patterson's throw to Peoples-Jones in the end zone is just beyond the target. Charbonnet is stuffed for a gain of only 2 on second down. Patterson on third down is chased from the pocket, and he comes 2 yards short of the line to gain after trying to move the chains himself.

Michigan will go for it on fourth-and-3. Patterson keeps the drive alive with a 4-yard gain.

Charbonnet gets 4 yards on first-and-goal from the 9. Patterson fakes the give to Charbonnet and then hits Peoples-Jones in the end zone to put Michigan back up by two scores.

Illinois pulls within 3 early in fourth quarter

Dominic Stampley takes a reverse for a gain of 3 on first down. Casey Washington makes the first grab of his career on second down, a 20-yard reception that'll give Illinois a first down at the 13.

A holding penalty makes it first-and-20 from the 23. Stampley catches a screen and then runs all over the field before getting smacked by Josh Metellus at the 4-yard-line to bring up second-and-1. Reggie Corbin finds the edge and makes it first-and-goal from the 3 with a gain of 1.

Matt Robinson keeps it and is originally ruled to have scored, but after review, it's ruled that Robinson is just short of the end zone. It'll be second-and-goal from the 1. Dre Brown scores easily on the next play. It's a one-score game.

Illinois' 2-point attempt fails, but Ambry Thomas is flagged for pass interference. They'll run it back.

This time Brown gets the handoff, and he gets into the end zone, making it a 3-point game.

Matt Robinson hits Donny Navarro for a completion that's good for 9 yards. Dre Brown moves the chains with a 3-yard carry on second down.

Brown reaches the Illinois 36 with a 4-yard run on first down. RaVon Bonner then makes a nice cut to reach the second level on an 11-yard gain that'll give the Illini a first down at the 49.

Bonner gains a yard before going down at midfield on the next play. Robinson throws too high for Reggie Corbin on second down, resulting in third-and-9. Josh Imatorbhebhe goes up over to Wolverine defenders to pull down a jumpball thrown by Robinson; the 35-yard connection puts Illinois at Michigan's 16.

Michigan takes a substitution penalty on the next play, resulting in first-and-5 from the 11.

Corbin gets 2 yards on first down. Robinson keeps it on the next play and is wrapped up soundly by Khaleke Hudson for no gain. Robinson rolls to his right and hits Navarro for a gain of 2 that's inches short of the line to gain.

Michigan struggling to pull away in second half

Michigan takes over at the 25.

Shea Patterson fires complete to Tarik Black for a 9-yard gain on first down. Tru Wilson picks up the first down with a 5-yard gain on second down.

Wilson then gets the carry again and reaches the Michigan 40 with a gain of 1. Patterson throws deep to Donovan Peoples-Jones down the left sideline, but the play is nicely broken up by Nate Hobbs.

Injury alert: Michigan WR Donovan Peoples-Jones was shaken up on the play and is being attended to by the training staff.

Patterson on the next play goes back at Hobbs, this time in coverage against Ronnie Bell, and draws a pass interference penalty. Michigan will have a first down at the Illinois 45.

Hobbs then appears to have recovered a fumble on the next play, but Christian Turner is ruled down before the ball is jarred loose. The play will officially be ruled as a 6-yard loss, bringing up second-and-16. Nick Eubanks drops a pass from Patterson but is then drilled by a defender and appears to be in a lot of pain. 

Injury alert: Michigan TE Nick Eubanks appeared to have injured his lower back on the play and is being attended to by the training staff.

Illinois cuts Michigan lead to 28-10 early in half

Isaiah Williams opens the half at quarterback for Illinois. Reggie Corbin rushes for a gain of 3 yards on first down. Dominic Stampley catches a pass on second down that's good for 4. Matt Robinson throws complete to Josh Imatorbhebhe for a pickup of 14 yards, Illinois' first third-down conversion of the afternoon.

Robinson on the next play tucks the ball and gets to the Michigan 35 with a gain of 7. Robinson's second-down throw misses the mark. Robinson tucks it again and runs on third-and-7, this time picking up 9 and a new set of downs in the process.

Dre Brown rushes for a gain of 4 on first down. Robinson rolls out and throws incomplete to Imatorbhebhe on second-and-6 from the 22.

A Wolverine defender is flagged for a face-mask penalty on a 1-yard run by Dre Brown on the next play. That'll bring up first-and-10 from the 23. Jordan Glasgow blocks Blake Hayes' punt. It's recovered by Hayes eventually, but all the way back near Illinois' 10.

Illinois moves the chains for the first time today on first down with an 11-yard run by Dre Brown. Brown gets it again on the next play, going down at the Illinois 46 with a gain of 15.

Brown is stopped for no gain on first down. Matt Robinson, back at quarterback for Illinois, hits Josh Imatorbhebhe on a crossing route for a 12-yard gain.

Donny Navarro gets Illinois to the 36 with a 6-yard run. A false start brings up second-and-9. Robinson is flagged for intentional grounding on third down. That'll move Illinois back into its own side of the field for third-and-25. Robinson's throw on third down is caught by Justice Williams for a gain of 5.

Blake Hayes' punt goes out of bounds at the Michigan 30.

Unsportsmanlike conduct penalty spoils Michigan drive

Michigan continues to produce through its ground game to start its second drive. Zach Charbonnet takes his first carry of the drive for a gain of 18 and his second run for a 16-yard pickup. Michigan has a first down at the Illinois 48.

Charbonnet is stopped for a gain of 3 on first down. Shea Patterson then throws his first pass of the game, a 10-yard completion to Nick Eubanks that'll bring up first-and-10 from the 35.

Tru Wilson gets a little shifty, breaks some tackles, and hits the right-side edge for a gain of 14.

Wilson gets it again on the next play, this time for a pickup of 9. Its second-and-1 from the Illinois 12. Wilson gets the line-to-gain on second down.

Ben Mason is handed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on first-and-10. It'll be second-and-25. A halfback screen to Charbonnet is swatted down by Owen Carney. Illinois has 12 men in formation before the next snap, bringing up third-and-20. Much more manageable. Charbonnet is stopped at the Illinois 16, bringing on the field-goal unit.

Quinn Nordin's 34-yard attempt is no good.

Jake Moody's kick goes for a touchback.

Isaiah Williams is now in the game for Illinois at quarterback. The freshman is wrapped up for a loss of 3 yards on a first-down keeper. He then gives to Reggie Corbin for a gain of 8 that brings up third-and-5. Williams' third-down throw is behind the intended receiver. 

Blake Hayes' punt goes over the head of Ronnie Bell and is downed at the Michigan 17.

Freshman back Zach Charbonnet opens things up for the Wolverines, taking the first-down carry into Illinois territory at the 49 for a gain of 16.

Charbonnet continues to be fed on the next set of downs, picking up 5 yards on first down and 4 on second down. Hassan Haskins hits a hole to pick up the first down, then spins away from a would-be tackler or two on his way to a 29-yard touchdown run. The Wolverines have an early lead.
