UM opens NCAA hockey tournament against ND

No.2 seed Michigan will play No. 3 Notre Dame in the NCAA men's ice hockey Midwest Regional on Friday in Cincinnati. Faceoff is 5:30 p.m.  at U.S. Bank Arena. The game will be carried on ESPNU.

UM (24-7-5) defeated Minnesota, 5-3, Saturday in the Big Ten championship game as Tyler Motte scored twice and Zach Werenski had three assists.
Notre Dame is 19-10-7.

The one-time CCHA rivals met at the 2008 Frozen Four in Denver, Colo., when Notre Dame won 5-4 overtime to advance to the NCAA championship game.

No. 1 seed North Dakota meets No. 4 seed Northeastern at 2 p.m. in the first game of the Midwest Regional.

Ferris State, which defeated Minnesota State to win the WCHA championship, will play top-seed St. Cloud State Saturday as the No. 4-seed in West Regional in St. Paul, Minn. Faceoff is 3 p.m. at the Xcel Energy Center.
