Ben Mason, a linebacker from Newtown High in Sandy Hook, Conn., has committed to Michigan, the Wolverines’ 12th verbal pledge to the 2017 class. He made the announcement Tuesday night.

The 6-foot-2½, 247-pound Mason is rated three-stars by 247 composite rankings.

Ben Mason of Sandy Hook (Conn.) Newtown High is Michigan's 12th verbal commitment to the 2017 recruiting class.

His announcement was carried live via Periscope. Mason tossed aside a few hats, including the Michigan hat, before picking it up again and placing it on his head.

Mason was first-team All-State last season as a junior. He had a number of offers and was choosing among Harvard, Navy, Wisconsin and Cal, among others.

He had 110 tackles, including six tackles for loss, and had 5.5 sacks last season, helping lead the team to a 12-1 record.

"The biggest thing from me was I was looking for the top academic school I could go to with a combination of top-level football so with me it was a no-brainer for Michigan,” Mason told 247Sports before he announced his decision.

He told 247Sports Michigan coaches see him as a linebacker "with the potential to play fullback."
