Harbaugh not impressed with Colorado's depth chart

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh didn’t seem overly amused by the Colorado depth chart released by the sports information department earlier this week.

Colorado decided since Michigan doesn’t release a depth chart, it would have some fun with its chart and released it publicly via Twitter. Harbaugh, speaking Thursday morning on the “Jamie and Stoney” show on 97.1, was asked about facing Colorado quarterback Elmer Fudd.

Huh? According to the Colorado depth chart, the Buffaloes are starting Fudd at quarterback, the Hanson brothers are on the halfback three-deep, James Bond is a defensive tackle, and so on.

“That was interesting, as well,” Harbaugh said flatly to show hosts Mike Stone and Jamie Samuelsen. “In our preparation for Colorado, we’ve had a hard time working humor into the preparations. They’re a very good football team.”

Harbaugh said he hadn’t seen the equally amusing back and forth between the Michigan and Colorado Twitter accounts.

“I saw the depth chart,” Harbaugh said. “I was trying to imagine how many people sat around and how many hours they worked on that. We’ve just found when it comes to the depth chart, modern technology seems to have made the depth chart to be an outdated task by about 20 years. We found studying last week’s film of the opponent is the most accurate way of determining another team’s depth chart.”

Michigan has yet to release a depth chart this season. Harbaugh said what anyone needs to know about a team is available through a variety of ways, on the web, on television, etc.

“There’s so much written about the team that’s on the internet,” Harbaugh said in response to a question from Stoney asking if the media needs a depth chart. “For those of us who watch the games … just felt modern technology that the most accurate way of studying and knowing what the opponent’s depth chart and who’s playing in the game is to look at the previous week’s film and not rely on another PR director’s assessment of what the depth chart is. You just go right to the tape.”

Harbaugh said no decision has been made regarding All-American cornerback Jourdan Lewis, who has not played the first two games because of a back issue that has affected his hamstrings and quads.

“Still working. Making progress,” he said, before addressing whether he will play against Colorado. “Still haven’t determined that.”
