Detroit News predictions: Michigan vs. Rutgers

The Detroit News

Angelique S. Chengelis, Matt Charboneau, John Niyo and Bob Wojnowski of The Detroit News predict the outcome of Saturday's Michigan-Rutgers game.

After five straight home games, Kyle Kalis and No. 4 Michigan takes their act on the road to Rutgers on Saturday.

Angelique S. Chengelis: Michigan avenged its 2014 loss at Rutgers last season, pounding the Scarlet Knights, 49-16, but the older Wolverines clearly want to wipe away memories of that 26-24 loss in 2014 when Rutgers fans stormed the field. Michigan 49-7

Matt Charboneau: Michigan finally hits the road and it won’t exactly be facing a stalwart at Rutgers, which got blitzed last week at Ohio State. Expect the Michigan offense that was held in check in the victory over Wisconsin to explode and put up the big numbers it did the first four weeks. Michigan 49-7

John Niyo: This one looks like a mismatch in every respect, including the weather forecast. Rutgers wants to run, but probably won’t against Michigan’s front seven. And they can’t pass, managing just three completions last week against Ohio State. The Wolverines' first road test won’t be much of a test. Michigan 42-7

Bob Wojnowski: It could be sloppy at Rutgers, and not just because of hurricane remnants. QB Chris Laviano  doesn’t even complete 50 percent of his passes, and the Scarlet Knights did nothing in a 58-0 loss to the Buckeyes. So what does Michigan have to fear? The weather, the night-game atmosphere and the fact Rutgers plays better at home. Beyond that, it’s a talent mismatch and the Wolverines' fearsome defense should be in control. Michigan 34-7
