UM's Jon Teske may have early edge on Austin Davis

’Twas the weekend for "secret" scrimmages.

A host of college basketball teams played unpublicized, closed-door scrimmages Saturday and Sunday, including Michigan.

Michigan traveled to play Akron, an early favorite in the Mid-American Conference, on Saturday.

Per NCAA rules, the scrimmages can't be discussed openly in the media before the games (they can afterward if the school so chooses). There's no official scorekeeping, and only essential personnel are allowed to attend the games.

But The Detroit News spoke to one person in attendance, who had the following observations, anonymously because he was not authorized to speak about the game.

* Jon Teske got the most reps among the two freshmen big men and appears the front-runner for the third big-man spot, with Austin Davis possibly redshirting.

Davis has gotten more publicity since signing with Michigan and had a good summer in pickup games on campus, but Teske seems to have separated himself during the early workouts and practices.

Teske's size (7-foot, to Davis' 6-10) is very appealing to Michigan coaches.

* Sophomore big man Moritz Wagner, who really came on at the end of his freshman season in the postseason, had a big game against Akron and figures to be "a matchup problem" for several opposing teams, the person in attendance said.

* The scrimmage score was reset at the half. From the sounds of it, a well-prepared Akron team might've won one of the halves, possibly the second.

* Ibi Watson, a guard from Ohio, was the freshman who stood out most for Michigan on Saturday.

* Senior Derrick Walton Jr. had a good game.

ESPN experts predict UM will be third in CFP rankings

The NCAA allows each Division I team to have two exhibitions, but many of them substitute one of the games with the so-called "secret" scrimmage.

A Michigan spokesman said the program wouldn't confirm any details, nor would coach John Beilein discuss anything that happened in the game.

Michigan hosts Armstrong State in an exhibition game Friday, and opens the regular season at home against Howard on Friday, Nov. 11.
