Postcard from Italy: Getting my gladiator on
So Gladiator School in Rome – Gruppo Storico Romano – is where the Michigan football team got a chance to learn how the great fighters trained and fought in another team-building activity. The carousel, spun by a man dressed in a wardrobe that was typical to ancient Rome, stood in the middle of the device that featured upper and lower bars.
The players had to jump over the lower bars and crouch low enough to avoid being hit by the upper, while coach Jim Harbaugh timed them. Assistant coach Chris Partridge joked that Michigan needs to add one of those carousels to the weight room at Schembechler Hall. What did I get to do? I got to pose with my head atop a gladiator cutout. I’ve never felt tougher, and my colleague, columnist Bob Wojnowski should fear me. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
