Tyrone Wheatley Jr., who left Michigan last Thursday, a day before camp opened, will play for Stony Brook this fall.

Stony Brook head coach Chuck Priore announced Wheatley, a tight end, joined the team in a release that appeared on the school’s website. Stony Brook is located on Long Island in New York.

Wheatley, the son of former Michigan running back great Tyrone Wheatley, spent three seasons with the Wolverines. He redshirted his first season. He played in 24 games with six receptions for 61 yards and a touchdown.

Wheatley told The Detroit News last week he supported his son’s decision.

“He made the decision, and I support him. Nothing more, nothing less," Wheatley said. “I told him, 'You’re 21, you’re a grown man. You know what’s best for you, and I support you.’”
