West Bloomfield — Lance Dixon's touchdown catch lifted West Bloomfield to a 20-17 overtime victory past Detroit Catholic Central in a district final on Friday.
The score came after Catholic Central (7-4) converted on a field goal during its first possession in overtime. A TD by C.C. junior receiver Cole Price on a catch and run tied it at 14-all in the third quarter.
“I never doubted my team once tonight," said Dixon, who also scored on a 7-yard run in the first quarter. "I knew we were going to find a way to pull it out.”
Both teams had chances to win in regulation.
West Bloomfield (9-2) was driving in the fourth quarter, facing a third-and-4 while veering close to field goal territory. The drive stalled when Catholic Central forced a sack on quarterback Christopher Harris, forcing West Bloomfield to punt.
Catholic Central's best chance came at the start of the fourth quarter when moved deep into West Bloomfield territory only to turn over the ball on downs with 5:15 left.
“Our defense stepped up when we needed them to the most,” West Bloomfield coach Ron Bellamy said.
Tre Mosley 81-yard reception staked West Bloomfield to a 14-7 lead in the second quarter. Mosley, who has committed to Michigan State, outran Catholic Central defensive backs to the end zone after collecting a pass from Harris.
Dixon's 7-yard run tied the game at 7.
Marco Genrich scored on a run to put Catholic Central up 7-0 with 1:59 left in the first quarter.
