Pressel up for return to Michigan for Meijer Classic
Morgan Pressel learned all about golf competing in junior tournaments throughout Michigan.
In her 10th season on the LPGA Tour, she’s looking forward to coming to Grand Rapids for the Meijer Classic at Blythefield Country Club beginning Thursday.
“It’s always special to play in front of some of my family and friends,” said Pressel, who spent summers with her grandparents in Grosse Pointe Woods. “I learned to play golf in Michigan every summer. I remember playing at Lochmoor (Club) a lot in Grosse Pointe working on my game.”
Pressel, 27, has played well this season. She finished fifth in the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship last month and tied for fifth in the U.S. Women’s Open earlier this month.
The finish at the U.S. Women’s Open gave Pressel five top-10 finishes in 10 tournaments before missing the cut (77-76, plus-11) in last weekend’s Marathon Classic in Sylvania, Ohio.
She missed the cut in last year’s event at Grand Rapids, but it hasn’t put a damper on her excitement.
“I enjoy the old-school design,” Pressel said of the course. “If you hit good shots, you definitely can make birdles.”
And, Pressel is confident with her game this year.
“I’ve been a lot better with my driver,” she said. “I missed a lot of fairways last year. I have a lot more confidence with my driver and I’ve put myself in better position to get birdies with my shots off the tee.”
Pressel has two career victories — she was the youngest major champion in LPGA history after winning the Kraft Nabisco title at 18 years, 10 months, nine days in 2007 — and has topped $800,000 in earnings this season, nearly $6.5 million for her career.
