Bath, Mich. – Sam Weatherhead of Grand Rapids beat Domenic Mancinelli of Northville 4 and 2 to win the Michigan Amateur at Eagle Eye Golf Club Saturday.

Weatherhead, a 21-year-old Michigan State golfer, trailed Mancinelli by one hole after 12. But he then won five consecutive holes, two with birdies and three with pars, to close out the match.

“I really wanted to play well here because I’ve played the golf course so many times, and practice here with my (MSU) team,” he said. “It was in great shape, firm and fast and playing really hard.”

Mancinelli, who just completed his freshman year at Grand Valley State, beat Ben Lewis, a caddie and former Hope College golfer from Holland, 2 and 1 in the morning semifinal.

Weatherhead beat University of Michigan golfer Reed Hrynewich of Muskegon 3 and 2 in his semifinal match.
