Berkley — It's not typical of the series, but Birmingham Brother Rice rode the combination of Alex Malzone and Grant Perry to a 41-14 victory over rival Detroit Catholic Central Friday night in Catholic League Central Division play.

From the outset, it was obvious Malzone wanted to get the ball to Perry, hitting him in stride for 25 yards on the first play from scrimmage and hooking up on a 7-yard touchdown just four plays later.

Perry hauled in all three of Malzone's touchdown passes, with the third coming on a 49-yard strike that saw Malzone underthrow his wide-open receiver. Perry made up for the mistake, however, by juking past two defenders and earning his way in for the score.

"I got underthrown, but Malzone said sorry for that," Perry said. "When I caught the ball, I was just focused on getting to the end zone."

"Those guys are pretty special," Brother Rice coach Dave Sofran said of Malzone and Perry. "We've never had a connection like that. They continue to amaze me."

Malzone finished 18-for-25 passing with 276 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for a score right before halftime to push the Brother Rice lead to 21-0.

Perry ended the game with 10 catches for 131 yards and the three scores.

The 27-point beatdown was the largest margin of victory for Brother Rice in the history of its rivalry with Catholic Central.

Brother Rice (4-0, 2-0) now leads the all-time series, 30-28-1.

Trailing 28-0 in the fourth quarter, Catholic Central (2-3, 0-1) finally got on the board when Joseph Fanning hit Michael Edwards for a 32-yard touchdown.

The pass was just Fanning's second completion of the game as he struggled to throw the ball for most of the night.

He finished 5-for-16 with 85 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, including a pick-six late in the fourth quarter that Bo Pickens returned 46 yards.

The vaunted run game for Catholic Central was kept in check, as well. They finished with 155 yards on the ground, but needed 37 carries and a couple of big plays by Alexander Bock to hit that mark.

Bock finished with 92 yards on five rushes.

"(The defense) came to play tonight," Sofran said. "I was worried about the run, but we were able to get some punts and get the ball back in our offense's hands."

Bobby Dixon III helped Brother Rice pick up some big first downs throughout the game, and he was rewarded when he finally got into the end zone in the fourth quarter from five yards out.

Dixon finished with 19 carries for 122 yards and a touchdown.
