Top five games this week

All games at 7 p.m. Friday unless noted

Orchard Lake St. Mary's (5-0) at Birmingham Brother Rice (5-0): This will be a showdown for first place in the Catholic League Central Division. Brother Rice won last year's meeting and the previous two went to St. Mary's, which put on a strong showing defensively in a 14-10 win over Warren De La Salle Friday.

Detroit East English (4-1) at Detroit Cass Tech (5-0), noon Saturday: Cass Tech will get its biggest test since an opening-week comeback win over Oak Park. East English has been dominant since an opening-week loss to Lansing Sexton, winning four straight by a 199-0 margin.

Livonia Churchill (5-0) at Canton (4-1): Expect Canton to have its hands full trying to slow down Churchill senior running back Paul Romain, who has rushed for 557 yards and 11 TDs the last three weeks. Canton remained in contention for the Kensington South title with a 22-21 win over Westland John Glenn.

Dearborn Fordson (5-0) at Warren De La Salle (3-2), at Wayne State: Fordson is coming off a 35-0 win in its rivalry game with Dearborn and has given up just 12 points in the last four games. De La Salle is looking for a much needed win after losing close Catholic League battles to Birmingham Brother Rice (28-21) and Orchard Lake St. Mary's (14-10).

Grand Rapids Christian (4-1) at Lowell (5-0): Christian took a thrilling 35-34 win over Hudsonville this past weekend for its third straight victory after a loss to Muskegon. Lowell quarterback Ryan Stevens threw three TD passes to Gabe Steed in a 32-14 win over Grand Haven last week.

Woodhaven 44, Gibraltar Carlson 43: Niko France piled up 303 yards of total offense, throwing for 150 yards and a TD and running for 153 on 19 carries to help Woodhaven remain unbeaten (5-0) and atop the Downriver League standings.

Grosse Ile 38, Milan 36 (2 OT): Grosse Ile (3-2) battled back from a 15-point (24-9) deficit with under five minutes left to tie the game — Andrew Mitroka finding Justin Moore for a 27-yard TD pass, then Kuvon Tucker picking the ball off the ground after a punt and running 60 yards for the score — and later defeated Milan on a PAT. Quarterback Trace Lindeman rushed for 212 yards and three TDs for Milan (2-3).

Grand Rapids Christian 35, Hudsonville 34: Malik McLaughlin (138 yards rushing, 104 receiving) was the hero, first hauling in a 28-yard pass to set up his own 8-yard TD run with 2:29 left for the difference in the win over Hudsonville. . Mason Opple had 236 passing yards for Hudsonville (3-2).

Macomb Dakota 21, Utica Eisenhower 14: Dimitri Abro returned an interception 91 yards for a TD for the difference for Dakota, which remains the team to beat in the MAC Red after pushing its record to 4-0 in league play.

Detroit Northwestern 49, Detroit Western 46: Danny Whitt threw for 206 yards and three TDS, including five passes for 162 yards and all of the TD passes to John Dozier for Northwestern (2-3). Romello Ross had 392 yards of total offense for Western (3-2).
