Class B volleyball: North Branch completes title run

North Branch earned the title of Class B state volleyball champions Saturday night at Kellogg Arena after coming up short in the title match in 2012 and 2010.

Senior outside hitter Laura Wilson had 22 kills to lead North Branch to a sweep (25-19, 25-15, 25-23) of Lake Odessa Lakewood to avenge a loss to Lakewood in the '12 title match.

North Branch (61-7-4) avenged a 2013 quarterfinal loss to Pontiac Notre Dame Prep with a win over the defending state champs in Friday's semifinal.

Wilson was at her best at the end of Game 3, getting her team's final four kills to close out the match.

"Two years ago we lost to Lakewood in the state final so we got them back and it feels great," Wilson said. "During a timeout (trailing 21-19 in Game 3), we said this is our game … it's not going four and we put our mind to it."

Of the comeback win, Wilson said: "It felt great. Maddie (setter Miner) was going to keep setting me up until I'd get it down. The last kill felt great."

It was the second state title for Jim Fish, who guided North Branch to the championship in 2009.

Vanessa Reynhout and Gracie Shellenbarger each had seven kills for Lakewood (51-9).
