Raymond Hermez didn't make the junior varsity squad last season as a sophomore, but a year later he found himself knocking down two 3-pointers to spark a second-quarter surge that led Sterling Heights to a 46-37 win over Algonac.

Sterling Heights coach Ryan Kay couldn't have been happier for his junior guard.

"It just shows that you never know who'll be your unsung hero," he said. "He worked hard over the summer and came back and made varsity this year. Stories like those make you feel good as a coach."

After both teams struggled to score in the first quarter, Sterling Heights (1-1) got it going in the second, taking a 24-14 lead into the break.

Solid defense and a poor shooting night from Algonac (1-2) allowed Sterling Heights to pick up its first win of the season despite it going 1-for-12 from the free-throw line.

"My seniors did a pretty good job down the stretch," Kay said. "I had five of them on the floor for the last five minutes. We really fought hard and grinded out a victory."

Fadi Ablahad led a balanced Sterling Heights offense with eight points.

Josh Splitner led all scorers with 13 for Algonac (1-2).
