Tuesday's roundup: Walled Lake Western wins tournament

Behind the performances of Marcus Bailey and Jerald Booker, Walled Lake Western edged Redford Thurston, 66-60, Tuesday night in the championship match of the Livonia Franklin Holiday Tournament.

Bailey recorded a double-double with 20 points and 17 rebounds, while Booker added 20 points.

"Marcus dominated the glass tonight, and Jerald dictated the game and broke people down," first-year Western coach Chip Lutz said.

Thurston (5-1) jumped out on Western early, taking a 20-11 lead into second quarter and headed into halftime with a 35-31 advantage. But Western bounced back in the third, outscoring Thurston by nine to take a 54-47 lead into the final quarter.

"I thought we played better defensively and controlled the gaps," Lutz said of the third. "We were real tough on the boards. I think our rebounding physicality played a big part.

"We were expecting great ball pressure and athleticism from Thurston. And we knew they can shoot the three ball. They hit six 3-pointers tonight."

Western (5-0), which was making its first appearance in the tournament, was able to keep Thurston at bay and close out the game in a back-and-forth fourth quarter to take home the title.

Rickey Hudgens led Thurston with 18 points.

Western defeated Livonia Franklin, 56-33, and Thurston beat Salem, 79-64, on Monday to reach the final.
