Jamell Green hit a big shot at the end of regulation, and Justin Parker scored all of his team’s six points in overtime as Warren Michigan Collegiate held off Mount Clemens for a 67-64 win in the first round of the Rocket Holiday Classic at New Haven.

Trailing by 14 heading into the fourth quarter, Collegiate (6-0) turned up the intensity on defense, forced turnovers and was able to trim its deficit to seven with 38 seconds remaining. Mount Clemens opened the door even wider for Collegiate, going just 2-for-7 from the free throw line in the final minute. Trailing 61-58 with 2.8 seconds to play, Collegiate took the ball out of bounds, and Green took his shot, hitting a desperation 35-footer to send the game into overtime.

“It wasn’t the shot we were looking for,” Collegiate assistant coach Mark Poplawski said. “But Jamell works on it all the time and he hit it.”

The comeback victory was revenge of sorts for Collegiate, which was knocked out of the state tournament last year by Mount Clemens.

“Our guys played hard and didn’t give up,” Poplawski said. “(They) just believed we were going to win.”

Malcolm Cohen led the way for Collegiate with 27 points and 10 rebounds, while Green finished with 17 points. Parker had 15 points and eight rebounds.

Devin Felts scored 19 to pace Mount Clemens (1-2).

Collegiate will take on New Haven tomorrow in the tournament championship game.
