Birmingham — Birmingham Marian took charge early Friday night, taking a 29-6 halftime lead and rolling to a 54-32 victory over Farmington Hills Mercy in a Catholic League girls basketball showdown.

"We finally played a team that had a game plan, had some players that stepped up," Marian coach Mary Cicerone said. "We pounded them pretty good in the first half, but we died in the second half."

The defending Class A state champions held Mercy to just two points in the second quarter, both coming on free throws.

"In the first half I thought we were awesome," Cicerone said. "Our team defense was great. Our execution, our press, our offense — everything was clicking. When we came out in the second half, it felt like they were playing like it was over."

With 7:23 left in the third quarter, Zora Pullen hit a 3-pointer to end Mercy's scoring drought and give the team some life. After shooting just 2-for-19 from the field in the first half, Mercy scored 18 points in the third quarter to make the score 44-24.

Mercy pulled within 18 with just over four minutes to play, but Marian proved too much to handle.

"They just take you out of anything you want to run," Mercy coach Gary Morris said. "At times they hurt our zone, but they hurt us more with their defense.

"I liked how we played better in the second half. I thought we were at least able to sustain some offense and we played with a little more poise, but it's that defense. They don't make anything easy."

Samantha Thomas led Marian (8-0, 3-0) with 15 points, and Jaeda Robinson scored 11.

Pullen had eight points for Mercy (7-2, 2-2).
