Tuesday's roundup: Barton powers Avondale to victory

West Bloomfield — Christopher Barton watched West Bloomfield standout junior guard Trishton Jackson put on a show during the third quarter, then decided to put one on of his own when it mattered most to lead Auburn Hills Avondale to a 67-66 victory Tuesday night.

Barton scored 13 of his 22 in the final quarter to help Avondale (13-3, 5-1) earn a share of the OAA Blue lead with West Bloomfield (13-2, 5-1).

Barton did it all the final eight minutes, and he needed to be at his best after Jackson's penetration move and pass led to Kevin McAdoo's 3-pointer early in the fourth to give West Bloomfield a 53-47 lead.

All Barton did was score off a dunk in transition, make free throws after taking the ball to the basket and score off a putback. But his finest moment was the 3-pointer with 45 seconds left for the difference.

"My teammate gave me a good screen and my other teammate found me and gave me a good pass and I just set my feet and knocked it down," said Barton, who averages 20 points. "I just wanted to finish strong. I knew I had to step up my play because ... my team needed me in the fourth."

The teams traded leads or were tied 15 times during the second half, which started with Jackson scoring 11. He had a 3-pointer, slam dunk, lay-up and scored in transition while flipping the ball around his back on his way to the basket.

Jackson then found McAdoo twice in the opening minutes of the fourth for 3-pointers, but Barton slowed down Jackson's scoring the rest of the way while also picking up his own game.

"I just put my mind to it and just made myself want to play defense," Barton said.

Jackson had 21 points, but missed two free throws and his final three shots, including two drives and a desperation 3-pointer as time expired.

Gervon Winn scored 17 for West Bloomfield, including a driving layup with a minute left to give his team its final lead at 66-64. Zach Allread scored 13.

Junior Jalen Latham scored 13 and sophomore Tyrone Bland added 10 for Avondale.
