St. Clair Shores — Bailey Thomas knocked down seven fourth-quarter free throws and Birmingham Marian held on for a 51-42 victory over Waterford Kettering in the Class A quarterfinals Tuesday night.

Marian moves on to the semifinals where it will meet Detroit King in a rematch of a game won at the buzzer by Marian in February.

After surrendering a 14-point halftime lead, Marian (24-1) found itself up by four with 3 minutes, 52 seconds remaining.

Kettering, whose pressure defense was a big part of getting it back into the game, committed foul after foul in the fourth quarter. Marian went 15-for-17 from the line and was able to win despite shooting 0-for-5 in the fourth quarter. Bailey Thomas went 7-for-8 from the line in the final quarter and finished with 12 points.

In the third quarter, Marian was 1-for-6 from the line.

"We fell apart," Marian coach Mary Cicerone said of the third quarter. "We didn't hold our composure. Everybody was panicking."

Kettering (23-2) used a 12-1 run to close out the third quarter after falling behind by 17 to start the second half. Emily Bernas' scored Kettering's first 3-pointer with just over a minute remaining in the quarter to pull Kettering within 10.

Haley Tewes knocked down a 3-pointer to pull Kettering within six points heading into the fourth quarter.

"The kids dug in with their minds and bodies," Kettering coach Scott Woodhull said. "They didn't quit."

In the first half, Marian used suffocating defense to force Kettering into 15 turnovers. Marian got its first half offense from Brittany Gray, who scored eight first-half points and finished with 12. Jaeda Robinson racked up 10 on the night for Marian.

Lauren Tewes had a game-high 15 for Kettering.
