West Bloomfield — The Fenton girls soccer team is headed to the Division 2 state finals for the first time in program history after defeating sixth-ranked Trenton, 1-0, in the semifinal matchup Tuesday at West Bloomfield High School.

"It's great," Fenton coach Matt Sullivan said. "It's one step farther than we've ever gone before. We're ecstatic."

After finishing the regular season on a four-game losing streak, Fenton (15-3-4) has won its last six games en route to a state championship.

It was scoreless at the half with both teams playing aggressively right out of the gate, but with 23:12 left in the game, Brianna Costigan found a wide-open Chloee Foor, who took the ball on a breakaway and scored the game's only goal.

"Bri and I have played for a long time together. We can just make eye contact and I'll know she's going to pass it to me," Foor said. "I was nervous because I obviously didn't want to miss it. I was scared, but when I saw her come at me I knew I had to do it."

Fenton controlled play most of the game, and after taking the lead half way through the second half, Sullivan told his team to focus on protecting rather than scoring.

"At that point we packed it in and just tried to slow the game down," Sullivan said. "We tried to match up their numbers and just limit their chances."

Fenton will face Richland Gull Lake (25-1-1) for a chance at the team's first state title Friday at Michigan State's DeMartin Soccer Complex, and Sullivan thinks his team will do just fine.

"Whoever we play is probably better than us — most teams are — but we just find a way to make it happen. We're just happy we get three more days together as a team.

"Win or lose Friday, it's about spending more time together. We couldn't be happier."
