David Goricki of The Detroit News looks ahead at this week’s top games, and looks back at the best from last week.

Top five games this week (all games 7 p.m. Friday unless noted)

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (3-0) at U-D Jesuit (3-0): Jesuit is the surprise of the Catholic League at 3-0 after finishing 2-7 in 2014. But the challenge is St. Mary’s, the defending Division 3 state champion ranked No. 3 in The News’ Super 20 poll. St. Mary’s boasts a top running game, but displayed an outstanding passing game behind Brendan Tabone.

Redford Thurston (2-1) at Dearborn Heights Robichaud (3-0): Robichaud ended a four-game losing streak in the last game played in the series in 2012. Robichaud QB Jairus Grissom and WR Traivon Clayton will test Thurston CB Alonzo McCoy.

Warren Cousino (3-0) at Clinton Township Chippewa Valley (2-1): Cousino, the defending MAC Blue champion, has averaged 43 points in a 3-0 start. Chippewa Valley, however, is among the premier teams in Macomb County. Cousino’s offense will be challenged by Chippewa Valley DB Stefan Claiborne and its defense will have a challenge trying to slow Chippewa Valley QB Patrick Briningstool (800+ yards, nine TDs).

Oxford (1-2) at Lake Orion (1-2): Toss the records aside in this OAA Red division games with the teams separated by only a few miles. Lake Orion has won three of the last five meetings, but Oxford had the upper hand in last year’s game, 21-14.

Warren De La Salle (2-1) at Birmingham Brother Rice (1-2), 7 p.m. Saturday: Brother Rice defeated De La Salle in Week 4 last season before De La Salle avenged the loss in the Division 2 regional final, ending Brother Rice’s 33-game winning streak and eventually winning the state title. This is the Catholic League Central Division opener for the teams.
