Friday’s roundup: Mount Clemens forfeits last two games
Quentin Hines talked of leading Mount Clemens to a state playoff appearance in his first year as head coach.
Instead, Mount Clemens (0-7) — which competes in the MAC Bronze — decided to forfeit its final two games of the season because of a lack of players.
“We ended up with just 12 or 13 players due to players being ineligible and getting hurt and we decided to cancel the last two games of the season, didn’t feel it was a safe situation for them,” Hines said Friday evening, a couple of hours before Mount Clemens would have taken the field for its Homecoming game against Center Line. “Everybody was playing both ways, hardly having the time to catch their breath or get a drink and we don’t have a freshman or JV team.
“We started with 25 players, then 10 were ineligible right away so we were quickly down to 15 and toward the end just 12 or 13 due to injuries. I feel the season would have been different with everybody available. I feel confident about the program going forward. We have to stress academics, make sure all the kids know the importance of education, because I graduated with two degrees (from Akron) and my (playing) days were over after two surgeries with the Patriots.”
Mount Clemens had an enrollment of 500 in 2008 when he attended the school, but it’s now at 250, Hines said.
Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA to be eligible to play sports there.
