Romeo and Novi have one thing in mind: A Class A volleyball championship rematch.
But before they can accomplish that goal, they need to take care of their semifinal opponents Thursday at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.
Romeo, which showcases Miss Volleyball Gia Milana, takes on Livonia Churchill, while Novi faces Grand Rapids Christian. The final is Saturday.
In last year’s five-set victory over Novi, Milana had 29 kills and Jodie Kelly chipped in with 13 — and both return.
Novi’s Erin O’Leary capped off a strong freshman year with 47 assists, and Miss Volleyball runner-up Victoria Iacobelli had 19 kills — and both return.
How good is Novi, which is attempting to win its first state title?
Well, O’Leary has already received an offer from Michigan and has accepted in her sophomore year. Novi swept Grosse Pointe North in a quarterfinal Tuesday, 25-11, 25-15, 25-19.
O’Leary and the Iacobelli twins (Victoria and Paulina) have a challenge in Grand Rapids Christian and its star, Dylynn Otte, who finished third in Miss Volleyball voting.
Class D semis
Battle Creek St. Philip and Plymouth Christian get semifinal action underway today in Class D.
St. Philip set a record last year with its ninth straight state title (Marysville won eight from 1997-2004). Coach Vicky Groat also matched the record of state championships won by a coach, equaling Jack Magelssen’s 10 with Portage Northern.
