Tuesday's roundup: Jackson's hot hand leads Dakota over Clarkston
Clarkston — A furious rally to start the fourth quarter wasn't enough to save Clarkston, as Macomb Dakota answered with a run of its own to close out an impressive win on the road, 46-35, on Tuesday.
Clarkston entered the fourth quarter trailing 32-22, and its offense was nowhere to be found. But a steal and a thunderous slam from Dylan Alderson brought the crowd to its feet, and the momentum carried Clarkston to an 11-0 run and its first lead at 33-32.
That's when Dakota's junior guard Jermaine Jackson Jr. went off, leading a 10-0 Dakota run to answer Clarkston's outburst, and scoring 10 of the game's final 16 points to power his team to victory.
"I think I'm a great player, and superstars make plays," Jackson said. "I was ready for this game."
Jackson finished with a game-high 23 points, and his coach took notice of his contributions on both ends of the floor, noting that Jackson took on the challenge of guarding Clarkston's star point guard Foster Loyer.
"He can stay in front of anybody he wants," Dakota coach Paul Tocco said. "He takes pride in his defense, and he did a great job."
Loyer led Clarkston with 17 points, but it was Jackson's defense that made it tough for Clarkston to get into its offensive sets and run plays with any conviction. Outside of its big run at the start of the fourth quarter, Clarkston was held to single digits in the first three frames, and shot just 5-of-23 from the field in the first half.
"We got exposed, played young," Clarkston coach Dan Fife said. "Our effort was there, but our shooters didn't shoot well, and (Jackson) controlled the tempo of the game."
Chris Marshall added 12 points for Dakota while Thomas Kithier grabbed some big rebounds in crunch time, also adding two late assists. .
Alderson scored 13 for Clarkston (1-1).
