Tuesday's roundup: Renaissance halts Western winning streak at 31

Detroit — Richard Talley set the tempo, putting on tremendous defensive pressure on Brailen Neely to help Detroit Renaissance end Western's 31-game winning streak with a 48-39 win Tuesday afternoon in the PSL opener for both teams.

Talley, a senior point guard, made things difficult for Neely, the Oakland University-bound guard, from the start. Renaissance opened the game with a 12-0 run and never trailed.

Western (5-1), the defending PSL and Class A state champion, did pull within 23-21 early in the third before Renaissance (5-0) responded with a 13-2 run to open up a 36-23 cushion, thanks to a driving layup by Talley, followed by his 3-pointer less than a minute later.

It was a rematch of last year's PSL championship game won by Western on a single point.

"I felt we did a great job defensively," Talley said. "The main purpose was to stop Brailen because he's their main scorer."

So, what did Talley do well against Neely to limit him to seven points on 2-of-10 shooting (1-of-5 on 3-pointers) after he came into the game averaging 22 points?

"I just played him solid, ran him off the line because he likes to shoot a lot of threes," Talley said. "Coach Vito (Jordan) did a great job with the scouting report and I just followed it."

And, yes Western's winning streak was a motivating factor in the outcome.

"Yes, pretty much since they won 31 straight, won the state championship and beat us by one for the (PSL) championship in a game I didn't play in because of an ankle injury," Talley said. "I feel a little relieved."

The teams are loaded with Division 1 talent, including Renaissance 6-foot-4 senior guard Justin Turner who has multiple offers from MAC and Horizon League schools.

Renaissance limited Western to 24 percent shooting (13-of-54), holding Western's backcourt combination of Neely and Armani Tinsley to 14 points on 4-of-25 shooting, 3-of-17 from 3-point range.

Turner (13 points, 10 rebounds) had high praise for Talley, who had 14 points (6-of-8 shooting), five assists and four steals.

Jalen Tobias, a 6-5 sophomore, had 14 points (7-of-9 shooting) and seven rebounds. A.J. Jackson, a 6-7, 280-pound center, had five points, seven rebounds and several blocks, making life miserable inside for Western's 6-5 senior Karim Murray (13 points, 4-of-13 shooting).

"Talley was great, stepped up big time for us," Turner said. "Our Coach (Jordan) always tells him if you want to be a scholarship player you have to go up against good people and Brailen's one of them and he got the job done."

And, of ending Western's streak, Turner said: "It was important since Western had the big streak, 31-and-0. I wouldn't say we paid attention to it, but it caught our attention and we wanted to end it to let everybody know we still have a name in this league and the state … that Renaissance is still a good team, make that a great team."

Well, Renaissance has Western's attention.

Turner had two fouls in the opening quarter, leading to Jordan going with the 2-3 zone in the second quarter. Jordan said Renaissance used the zone for close to half the game since Western had trouble making perimeter shots.

Renaissance also did a good job of handling Western's full-court pressure and half-court trap during second half.

"We played hard today," Jordan said. "I thought we did a good job of contesting the shots. I've seen games where Western made 12, 14, 15 threes and all you can do is make it tough on them and hopefully they don't go in and I thought we did a good job on it."
