For the boys basketball teams at Detroit Catholic Central and Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard, one could easily make the argument that Wednesday night was more about what each team was playing for instead of the game itself.

Catholic Central won, 77-52, in the fifth annual Masquerade for Mott game at Gabriel Richard.

“It’s really important for us,” Catholic Central coach Bill Dyer said. “Tyler’s (point guard Laurentius) mother (Ellen) died from brain cancer this year, and all of us know someone who has been affected by cancer.”

A total of $9,116 was raised by both schools for the Chad Tough Foundation, in honor of Chad Carr, the grandson of former Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr.

Chad died from an inoperable brain tumor in November.

Dyer said both schools have combined to raise more than $20,000 over the last two years for C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor.

In the game itself, CJ Baird led the way with 18 points for Catholic Central (4-1).

Joe Chavey scored 13 to lead Gabriel Richard (4-4).

“We had a lot of balanced scoring tonight,” Dyer said, adding that Baird and Chavey were the only players to score in double digits.

Catholic Central trailed 12-10 after one quarter and 34-25 at halftime.

“They (Gabriel Richard) made some shots early,” Dyer said.

He said Laurentius contributed defensively down the stretch, on the way to the win.

“He played really good defense for us,” Dyer said. “He was really solid with the ball.”

He said many players for each school grew up together, which adds another element to the Masquerade for Mott.

“There’s more of a family atmosphere between the two schools,” Dyer said. “I think the game is a clean game. It’s always fairly played. We know them (Gabriel Richard) almost as well as we know our own players.”
