Commerce Township — Waterford Mott coach Jeff Jayson said he was relieved on Tuesday night, following his team’s 66-57 win over host Walled Lake Northern.

The win was Mott’s first of the season.

“It’s nice to get that monkey off our back,” he said. “The kids earned it. They played really hard and tonight’s effort showed they wanted to win. I’m really proud of them.”

Elijah Crowder had 20 points to lead Mott (1-9, 1-4 KLAA North). Tariq Hardy added 13.

“He’s been struggling a lot with his shot,” Jayson said of Crowder. “He came out and knocked down some big shots for us and got us rolling early.”

Spencer Brown scored 20 and Matthew O’Brien 13 for Northern (4-6, 2-2).

Mott took early advantage of Northern miscues and jumped out to an early 5-2 lead, with 6:00 left in the first quarter. Mott kept rolling, going on a 9-4 run in the last 3:30 of the quarter. After one, Mott was on top, 19-10.

Mott kept rolling in the second quarter, holding Northern to one basket in the first 4:30. Northern’s offense picked up, going on a 9-4 run over the final three minutes, but Mott was still ahead 34-21 at halftime.

“We wanted to spread them out,” Jayson said. “We didn’t think they could guard us with the man-to-man, which gave them problems. (I told them to) be patient and they’ll give us good looks.”

Both teams traded baskets for most of the third quarter, but continued poor shot selection and turnovers were an issue for Northern. After three, Mott had a 34-21 lead.

“We did turn it over way too much,” Northern coach Ron Thompson said. “I think we came out without the kind of energy that we’ve been coming out with.”

Northern seemed to settle in midway through the fourth quarter, going on a 7-0 run and cutting Mott’s lead to single digits (51-44, 5:25 left) for the first time since the end of the first quarter.

Northern took advantage of three Mott turnovers late to cut the deficit to four, 59-55, with 1:06 left. O’Brien led the charge with nine points in the fourth quarter.

“We wanted to try to make them work,” Jayson said. “We didn’t have to be as aggressive, fortunately.”

Bob Iaquaniello fouled out for Northern with 2:15 left. He finished with two points.

Tariq Hardy fouled out for Mott with 32.6 seconds left. He finished with seven points.

Crowder said he felt equally as relieved as his coach, if not more so.

“It was just amazing,” Crowder said. “We just kept pushing.”

Northern will travel to Walled Lake Central on Friday, while Mott plays White Lake Lakeland.
