Warren De La Salle can only hope Mike Giannone can duplicate the kind of success that he achieved at Macomb Dakota as he takes his coaching talent to the Catholic League.

Mike Giannone has been named Warren De La Salle football coach.

Giannone, 55, was named head football coach at De La Salle Friday.  He had guided Dakota to 15 straight state playoff appearances, including Division 1 state championships in 2006 and 2007. He had a record of 139-40 during that 15-year span and 158-51 during his entire 18-year career at the MAC Red school, leaving with four consecutive division championships.

Giannone will replace Paul Verska who retired this past fall. Verska led De La Salle to the Division 2 state title in 2014.

Giannone was the second pick to lead De La Salle’s program. Clinton Township Chippewa Valley head coach Scott Merchant took the job earlier this month, but changed his mind the following week.
