Warren Michigan Collegiate overcame a 10-point, second-quarter deficit to defeat Troy Athens in an Oakland Activities Association boys basketball crossover game Wednesday night, 74-68.

Damion Osley scored 17 and Justin Parker had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Collegiate (7-6).

Athens assistant coach Scott Germansky said the second quarter was the turning point.

“We just wanted to play at our pace and not theirs,” Germansky said. “We wanted to attack the basket and keep up with them on the boards. (Michigan Collegiate) tried to give us the lead, but we couldn’t capitalize.”

Fouls may have been the major difference in the game as Michigan Collegiate shot 44 free throws on 31 Troy Athens fouls.

Taylor McCaskill scored 24 and Jacob Brantley added 20 points for Athens.

Despite its 1-11 record, Germansky believes the sophomore-laden team is preparing for a successful future.

“We graduated nine seniors from back-to-back OAA White league championship teams and currently have seven sophomores on the team,” Germansky said. “We’re getting better at handling the ball, but we just can’t put it all together yet.”
