Utica Ford’s boys basketball team trailed for the first three quarters of Thursday’s game at East Detroit.

Donnie Schuster’s layup with 10 seconds left in the fourth gave Ford the 56-55 win.

“We did a great job in the second half,” Ford assistant coach Dan Mullen said.

Schuster was the leading scorer for Ford (6-7, 3-5 MAC White) with 18 points. Sammy Rizzo had 16.

“He had a really strong second half,” Mullen said of the 6-foot-2 junior point guard who scored 14 of his 18 in the final two quarters. “He came out really strong and aggressively in the second half.”

Aaron Springfield scored 22 and Darius Peterson 13 for East Detroit (2-11, 1-7).

East Detroit led 30-20 at halftime, but Ford put up 22 points in the third quarter to cut the deficit to three, 45-42, going into the final eight minutes.

Ford’s defense held East Detroit to a season-low 10 points in the fourth quarter.

Ford will host Roseville on Tuesday. The two teams played each other on Jan. 15. Roseville won, 66-62, in overtime.

“We just have to continue to build off (the win),” Mullen said. “It’s a good, tough league game.”
