One of the state’s top wrestling teams will be banned from competing in the upcoming MHSAA team wrestling tournament.

The MHSAA released a press release Tuesday stating No. 5 Grandville will be withdrawn from Thursday's Division 1 team district at Hudsonville for exceeding the limit of days of competition allowed during the 2015-16 regular season.

A number of wrestlers from Grandville will also be banned from competing in Saturday’s individual districts unless they didn’t exceed the limit of 14 days of competition.

Grandville reached the state team finals in Battle Creek in 2013 and 2014, losing in the quarterfinals both years.

The News sent several calls to Grandville coach Bubba Gritter, who declined to comment on the situation.

Grandville has numerous outstanding wrestlers who may not be eligible to compete in the individual district, including senior Boony Merryweather.
