Birmingham — U-D Jesuit raced out to an early lead, leaving little doubt about the final result of the Catholic League A-B tournament semifinals against Dearborn Divine Child, cruising to a 62-29 victory.

Jesuit (18-0) moves on to Sunday’s final at Calihan Hall, where it looks to collect its fourth consecutive tournament championship against the winner of today’s Detroit Loyola-Warren De La Salle semifinal.

Jesuit senior guard Cassius Winston (Michigan State) scored 10 in the first quarter as his team played a suffocating press defense that led to easy baskets. Jesuit pushed its lead to 24-5 early in the second quarter.

Winston finished with 24 points.

“That’s been a big thing in practice this week, to play our game from the beginning,” Winston said. “We got our minds right and came out hot.”

Divine Child (14-4) struggled in just about every facet, as even getting the ball across half-court proved to be a chore.

“I thought we did a nice job of keeping pressure on without fouling,” Jesuit coach Pat Donnelly said. “Our goal was to pressure them the whole time, dictate tempo, and get the game going at a pace that’s conducive to using our athletes.”

Sophomore guard-forward Quinn Blair did his best to keep Divine Child within shouting distance, scoring 11 in the first half and finishing with 13.

Jesuit took a 34-16 halftime lead and Divine Child never got closer than 16 in the second half.

Jesuit also outrebounded Divine Child, 31-13, with junior forward Ikechukwu Eke leading the way with nine.
