Junior point guard Darian Owens-White scored 25 to lead River Rouge to a 49-44 victory over Onsted at Dundee Wednesday night for its first Class B regional title since 1999.

River Rouge (22-3) limited Michigan-bound center and Mr. Basketball finalist Austin Davis to 17 points, fronting him with 6-5 sophomore Kaleb Maddox, with backside help from 5-10 junior Robert Williams.

“I’m so excited for these guys,” River Rouge coach Lamonte Stone said.

“They executed the game plan better than some of my college teams (as an assistant at Eastern Michigan, Ohio State and Bowling Green). We weren’t going to get beat with Austin Davis scoring 40; someone else would have to have the game of their life.”

With the game even at 44, Stone went to the stall with four minutes left to take the final shot, but Onsted (23-1) fouled and Owens-White made two free throws.

River Rouge then had a defensive stop and forced a turnover in the final minutes and converted three of four free throws.
