Looking for its first win of the softball season on Wednesday afternoon, Clawson downed visiting Royal Oak Shrine, 6-4, thanks to a late scoring surge.

Trailing 4-1 in the fifth inning, Clawson freshman Ariana Inez entered the game as a pinch hitter and knocked in two big runs to get a two-out rally started.

Clawson (1-2) ended up scoring five in the inning to take a two-run lead that would ultimately hold up.

Clawson pitcher Maddie Sparks threw a complete game, finishing with five strikeouts in seven innings and helping her own cause at the plate, batting 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

“She threw a ton of strikes,” Clawson coach Kelly Horne said. “She only had four walks, which has been a problem for us in the past.”

Aly Orville, Clawson’s No. 3 hitter, finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with two clutch RBIs.

Horne credited Inez, for the win, saying the team’s victory wouldn’t have been possible if not for her clutch two-out hit in the fifth.

“(We still need to work on) consistency at the plate and making contact every time,” Horne said.

Shrine (0-1) will host Harper Woods on Tuesday, while Clawson will host Hazel Park on Friday.
