Tuesday’s roundup: Notre Dame, Lutheran North split
Pontiac Notre Dame Prep visited Catholic League C-D Division rival Macomb Lutheran North Tuesday night for a doubleheader and came away with a split in two vastly different contests.
Sophomore pitcher Matt Pezolt earned his first varsity win in a complete game, two-hit performanace in which he struck out 12 for Notre Dame en route to a 7-0 win in Game1.
“Matt was so tough and showed great poise,” Notre Dame coach Darren Audia said.
Ben Mancini was the driving force for Notre Dame’s offense, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs, a double and a walk over the two-game affair.
Mancini drove in the only run for Notre Dame (3-2, 1-1) in Game 2, an 11-1 Lutheran North victory that was halted when the mercy rule took effect after the fourth inning.
Michael Barno was the winning pitcher for Lutheran North (2-3, 2-1). He threw all four innings, giving up just one run on three hits.
On the day, Andrew Carpenter had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored, and Kory Czajkowski went 2-for-4 with a triple, two walks and two runs scored for Notre Dame.
Detroit Cass Tech 2, Detroit King 1: Andre Bell struck out 13 and allowed three hits to earn the victory for Cass Tech (1-0, 1-0 PSL).
Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett 7, Ann Arbor Greenhills 2: Sean Fannon pitched a complete game and went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Noah Miller went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Connor McCarron scored three runs for Liggett (1-0, 1-0 MIAC Blue). Greenhills is 1-1, 0-1.
Melvindale ABT 19, Taylor Trillium 5: Clif Pope went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, Thomas Chandler went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Damone Tesley had a three-run double for ABT (1-4, 1-1 Michigan Metro). Trillium is 0-1, 0-1.
Utica 7-5, Troy Athens 0-3: In the opener for both teams, Athens' Lanie Ellinger pitched a complete game and struck out seven in the first game and had a double in the second game.
