Wednesday’s roundup: Woods Tower wins MAC Gold opener

Connor Muldowney Special to The Detroit News

Hannah Chaffee went the distance as host Warren Woods Tower defeated Warren Mott, 6-4, in the first Macomb Area Conference Gold softball matchup of the season for both teams.

“She had good movement on her fastball,” Tower coach Lance Sell said. “She held (Mott) down most of the game. She pitched great.”

Woods Tower scored three runs in the second inning to take the lead and never looked back.

Samantha Morin drove in one of those runs and finished the game 3-for-4 with two singles and a double. Holly Cooper and Kylie Ray both went 2-for-4 for Tower (2-0, 1-0).

It’s always good to get that first conference win of the season, but Sell isn’t entirely satisfied with where his team is at.

“We need to make fundamental plays in the outfield and infield,” he said. “We need to improve on defense. Fundamentally, we need to do these things to be a better team.”

Tower will travel to Roseville on Thursday. Mott (0-1, 0-1) will travel to Port Huron Northern on Monday.
