Tuesday’s roundup: McCarron powers Liggett to win
One thing is true for Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett: When Connor McCarron sees the ball, he almost always hits it.
That’s one of the reasons Liggett’s baseball team is 5-0, after Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest, in which McCarron was 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and 2 RBIs, improving his batting average to .785.
“He really picked us up offensively,” Liggett coach Dan Cimini said. “He’s been big for us all year.”
McCarron’s RBI triple in the bottom of the fourth broke a 0-0 tie for Liggett (5-0, 3-0 MIAC Blue). He scored again in the fifth, on a double by Will Morrison (2-for-3). Morrison later scored on an errant throw to third base, making it 3-0.
“We hit the ball really hard early in the game, but didn’t have anything to show for it,” Cimini said.
That was more than enough for Liggett’s starting pitcher, Sean Sannon. He pitched a complete-game two-hitter, allowing an unearned run while striking out six and walking two.
“Sean pitched a terrific game,” Cimini said. “He pounded the zone. He just did it all for us today.”
Lutheran Northwest (3-3, 0-1) scored its run in the top of the sixth.
“They never really threatened after that,” Cimini said.
