A late rally gave visiting Grosse Pointe South a 6-5 victory Thursday over division rival Clinton Township Chippewa Valley.

South (7-4, 2-1 MAC Red) led 1-0 after four innings before Chippewa Valley got four unearned runs in the fifth.

“We could’ve given up,” South coach Dan Griesbaum said, “but we came back.”

South scored two runs in the top of the sixth to trim its deficit to 4-3.

Then in the top of the seventh, the leadoff hitter drew a walk.

“I knew we had a chance,” said Griesbaum.

South used small ball to score three runs and Alex Martinez came in to close out the game in the first relief appearance of his career.

Brad Thompson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Will Poplawski had two hits for South.
