Saturday’s roundup: Country Day, Liggett split baseball DH

Beverly Hills – Detroit Country Day and Grosse Pointe Woods Liggett split a doubleheader in baseball on Saturday. The Knights took the opener 3-0 while the Yellow Jackets prevailed in the nightcap 6-0.

In the first game, Matt Gushee pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and Connor McCarron had a double, a sacrifice fly and two RBI for Liggett (8-1). In the second game, Steve Mann went five innings, allowing three hits and striking out four for the win, and Mike MacLean went 2-for-2 for Country Day (10-3).

Howell 10-1, Novi 9-2: In the opener, Caleb Balgaard went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Brett Chaperon went 3-for-4 with two RBI for Howell (12-5). In the nightcap, Jack Reilly tossed four innings of one-hit ball while striking out two for the win and Noah Matthews went 2-for-4 for Novi (9-8).

Livonia Invitational: Birmingham Groves won three games, defeating Livonia Franklin, 4-3, Livonia Churchill, 12-11 in eight innings, and Livonia Stevenson, 6-0. Chaise Ford struck out seven and Joe Roberts had two hits in the win over Franklin. Zavier Warren went 4-for-4 and was the winning pitcher in the victory over Churchill. Pitcher Noah Zacharias only allowed one hit in six innings while Ford had two doubles in the win over Stevenson for Groves (9-3).

Melvindale ABT 18-20, Dearborn Heights Robichaud 0-5: In the first game, Cameron Pope went 4-for-4 with four RBI, Austin Laforet went 3-for-3 with three RBI and Alberto Chavez went 2-for-2 with two RBI for ABT. In the nightcap, Zjzjai Smith went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Rene Juarez went 3-for-3 with three RBI for ABT (10-4).


Birmingham Groves Tournament: Warren Woods-Tower won two of three games, defeating Berkley, 5-2, and Taylor Truman, 17-7, while losing to Detroit Country Day, 8-3. Kylie Ray homered and was the winning pitcher in the victory over Berkley and went 4-for-4 in the win over Truman. Gabby McElrath homered for Woods-Tower (18-2, 4-0 MAC Gold) in the loss to Country Day.
