After losing its first four games of the season by a combined score of 60-7, the Melvindale ABT baseball team has ripped off 17 consecutive victories after a 15-4, six-inning win Thursday night over Ecorse.

Cameron Pope struck out 12 in a complete game for ABT (17-4), and Breyon Lowe and Thomas Chandler led the way at the plate with two hits and two RBIs apiece.

Doug Brown had two hits and an RBI for Ecorse (1-7).

Pope and Zjzjai Smith have been a big part of ABT’s resurgence at the plate this season. Both are toting batting averages above .500 for an offense that has soared in recent weeks.

“We started the season a little slow, but this team’s coming together,” ABT coach Joe Passalacqua said. “The bats have been on fire.”

In last year’s district playoff against West Bloomfield, ABT let a 7-2 lead get away. This year, Passalacqua is determined to keep his kids focused.

“We’ve definitely got our sights set on bigger things this season,” the third-year coach said. “We’re getting ready for district play and we’ve got a good mix of young kids and seniors.”

ABT has seven regular-season games remaining before the postseason begins in early June.
