Looking ahead to Districts on Saturday, Grosse Pointe South coach Dan Griesbaum put a short leash on starting pitcher Logan Mico.

That didn’t matter as South defeated visiting Marysville, 9-2, Wednesday.

“We knew he was only going to go three innings,” Griesbaum said. “(Logan) pitched his best game today.”

Mico pitched three scoreless innings while allowing one hit with seven strikeouts.

Cameron Shook came in to pitch three innings, allowing two runs, and Alex Martinez pitched the final inning to close out the game for South (17-19).

South scored three runs in the first, fifth and sixth innings.

Brad Thompson and Martinez both had two hits and an RBI and David Toth hit a two-RBI double for South.

Despite the solid play on defense Wednesday evening, Griesbaum admitted that South needs to improve in that aspect of the game before Saturday.

“Defense has been our Achilles’ heel this year,” he said.

Grosse Pointe South will host East English Village Prep with the winner facing either Detroit Cass Tech or Detroit King. The team that comes out of that bracket heads to the U-D Jesuit Regional.
