Freshman throws no-hitter, Richmond takes D-2 crown

East Lansing – Freshman Erin Shuboy pitched a no-hitter, leading Richmond to a 2-0 victory over Vicksburg in the Division 2 softball state championship game on Saturday.

Shuboy faced the minimum of 21 batters and struck out seven. She had one walk, to Vicksburg pitcher Avery Slancik in the second inning, but otherwise was perfect in a 98-pitch outing.

Richmond (32-9) scored both of its runs in the fourth inning. Shuboy drove in the first run on a groundout and Allison Swantek, who had reached on an error, scored on a wild pitch.

Slancik was impressive in the loss for Vicksburg (36-9), giving up six hits and one earned run. She struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter in going the distance.
