Coming off of two disappointing ties in its last two games, Fraser bounced back in a big way with a win over Macomb Area Conference Red Division rival Utica Eisenhower, 4-2, in boys soccer on Monday night.
After posting draws against conference foes Clinton Township Chippewa Valley and Macomb Dakota, Fraser, despite being undefeated this season, dropped from first to fifth in the state’s high school coaches rankings this week.
Sandro Suffredini got the scoring started and Connor Piccolo tallied his 17th goal of the season to give Fraser (9-0-4, 1-0-2) an early 2-0 advantage.
Eisenhower (5-4, 3-3) was able to even things up before halftime with goals from Nino Avola and Nathan Gryspeerd, much to the dismay of Fraser coach Thaier Mukhtar.
“We had complete control,” Mukhtar said. “But because of mental lapses, we’re tied. I told (the team) to clean up their mistakes.”
Fraser did clean up its mistakes, getting the winning goal from Alex Mezin 12 minutes into the second half. Hunter Showers provided the late insurance goal.
In addition to his early goal, Piccolo assisted on all of his team’s other scores.
“He’s the straw that stirs the drink,” Mukhtar said. “He’s the quarterback. When he’s on, we’re unstoppable.”
Fraser, which won the MAC Red in 2013 and 2014, takes on defending division champion Utica Ford on Wednesday night.
